Fermenting gestures
Participatory baking event at Sodas2123, Vilnius, Lithuania
2025

Fermenting Gestures was a participatory bread-making ritual exploring bread as a medium of memory, connection, and transformation. Participants made dough and fermented it with the artist’s sourdough starter, and shaped small bread talismans inspired by the Slavic tradition of Nowe Latka — symbolic animal-shaped breads associated with protection, abundance, and new beginnings.
As the bread rose and baked, participants gathered around the fire to share stories and reflect on our relationship with bread, food, and grain. The ritual ended with a shared meal, where the bread talismans were broken and eaten together.
