Bread ritual installation
New Years Gods is an installation consisting of bread sculptures made into a circle and placed in the heart of Blunk. New Years are bread figurines, a ritual bread traditionally made by Slavs around New Year’s time. They often took the form of animals, usually domestic or the ones that lived around. Their form was symbolic, holy and magical. They had the life-giving power. They protected against scarcity, misfortunes and diseases. It was believed they bring happiness. They were made into circles and placed in the heart of the house. The figurines were given to the children, some of them were also shared with animals. It was significant to share them with all those around you. Creating the sculptures I looked into the forms of Slavic bread sculptures, local animals, animal mutations and ritual figurines from various cultures. The installation invited one to enter a mysterious world – the universe of New Years Gods.
