To the bread gods, grain gods, ancestors, and demons
from UN(SEEN) group exhibition
2024, Heimdal Kunstforening—Hovedgalleriet , Norway
Text by Daniel V. H. Hansen
The installation created a space dedicated to the worship of bread deities, grain spirits, ancestors, and demons. It served as a place for contemplation, inviting visitors to cross boundaries and experience parallel cosmologies. The work brought together various bread rituals from different cultures, including crocodile-shaped Roti Buaya, breads from the Egyptian Tomb of Kha and Merit, Slavic bread figurines, Sicilian San Giuseppe bread, and other traditional forms. Through these symbolic bread objects, the installation explored the spiritual, cultural, and ritual significance of bread as a carrier of memory, belief, and connection between humans, nature, and the unseen world.
